Weekly

The week that was, ending 22nd June.

The US action versus Iran is rational, given what we know. The regime in charge of Iran supporting Palestinian Hamas and Hezbollah has no immediate replacement, so a weakening of its offensive weapons real and potential is the only option. Limited US engagement is the hope.

The United Kingdom is being rebranded the Yookay. This is a soubriquet denoting the transition from the past of Great Britian to a smaller world player, with less influence and ability. All nations go through change, possibly his change could be more painful for residents of the Yookay as they grapple with the transition. The Yookay is accepting vast numbers of immigrants changing the social fabric and fiscal position, has terrible productivity numbers, has a weakening fiscal base, very divided society, crime issues and an increasingly dependent electorate. It is not so much managed but promoted decline. The population is angry and until a radical Bukele like saviour could be found this will continue.

As part of this transition the Yookay has been grappling with human life; the Assisted Dying bill and the changes in the Crime and Policing Bill. These both now go to the House of Lords. The change in the Crime and Policing Bill: the Yookay Parliament voted to decriminalize abortion for women in England and Wales, marking the most significant change to abortion laws in nearly 60 years. The amendment, proposed by Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi to the Crime and Policing Bill, passed with 379 votes in favor and 137 against. It removes the threat of criminal prosecution for women who end their own pregnancies, including those using abortion pills obtained online, under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act. This change has the effect of decriminalizing abortion after 24 weeks or pregnancy up to birth. Mr Curious rarely comments on the thorny abortion issue, but makes an exception on this. No woman baring medical emergency needs to be able to abort a baby after 24 weeks without facing consequences. Sure, this doesn’t decriminalize the medical assistance in these situations, but enough. The Yookay already has Europe’s most lax abortion rules. The right to life of the unborn needs to be seen at least as important as to the right of choice. Self centred individualism coming from the Western Enlightenment has a lot to answer for.
